Syllabus and Grading System
The Kyokushin Kai Karate syllabus aims to provide a clear path for
students to learn and improve in a structured, progressive manner. As
in many martial arts Kyokushin Karate utilises a belt system to mark a
student's progress through the syllabus. The syllabus is split into 10
levels referred to as Kyu with each belt being comprised of two
seperate kyu. The order and colour of the belts is shown in the
diagram to the right. Each Kyu in the syllabus includes a range of
techniques (punches, kicks and blocks), stances, combinations, kata and
physical exercises (press ups, sit ups etc).
Gradings are held every three months and whilst grading regularly is encouraged each student is free to progress at a rate they feel comfortable. During the grading the student will be tested and asked to perform all of the components of the Kyu they are being graded for. The students commitment and attitude are also taken into account when being graded.
Karate is not only a great way of increasing fitness and flexibility but also builds confidence and self-esteem as well as self-discipline, respect, concentration and courtesy.
